Wellness Initiative Underway with New Meals Program: National attention is being drawn to the surge in childhood obesity rates. Children from working-class, minority, and immigrant families are most at risk for developing obesity and ailments related to the condition. Schools are in a unique position to turn the tide against obesity as being one of the few organizations that are thoroughly involved in a child’s life on a daily basis. FLACS has discontinued its regular practice of having frozen meals delivered to the school to be re-heated and served to students. FLACS has introduced a new meals program in accordance with recommended daily allowances of healthy food and portion sizes for children. FLACS renovated its facility’s kitchen to accommodate the project and has hired an Executive Chef to spearhead the initiative. Student meals will be prepared daily with fresh ingredients from local vendors and farmer markets. Students will be introduced to different types of diets and will experience food from diverse cultures. FLACS’ pro-active approach will work to develop sound decision-making in children with regards to the food they eat and mediate healthy relationships between children and food.
