The Spanish program at FLACS provides students with the experience of learning another language and enhancing cultural understanding and appreciation.
Family Life Academy Charter School uses the curriculum outlined in !Viva el Español! This program is a six-level program that encourages Spanish language proficiency in students beginning in the elementary grades. The !Viva el Español! program develops immediate language skills and equips students with useful and life-long language acquisition strategies.
Lessons include group work and hands-on activities to encourage students to communicate in Spanish and to constantly improve their proficiency. For native and novice Spanish speakers, the program refines language skills, enhances vocabulary, accentuates commonly misused phrases, and emphasizes grammatical rules and irregular verb conjugation.
In a non-critical environment, formal and informal assessments are administered to determine individual learning rates. Assessments are presented to evaluate comprehension of specific vocabulary and structures in an enjoyable and relaxing environment.
The progression is gradual and linguistically appropriate. Language acquisition becomes a positive, nonthreatening process, similar to the way children acquire their first language. The Spanish program at FLACS encourages students to enjoy the Spanish learning experience.
