Reading Excellence And Discovery

The Reading Excellence and Discovery (READ) Foundation serves at risk kindergarten and first graders by recruiting and training teens to provide structured one-to-one tutoring in reading. READ has served more than 11,000 children and teens since its inaugural year in 2000! READ has also grown significantly in this time: from 37 children, 24 teens and 2 schools in the Bronx to nearly 1,400 children and 1,000 teens in partnership with more than 100 elementary, middle, and high schools and community based organizations in all five New York City boroughs in 2008.

FLACS partnered with the READ Foundation in 2004. R.EAD takes place from October to March three times a week, after-school, for two hours and in the summer daily for five weeks for four hours. FLACS targets kindergarteners and first graders struggling in literacy and English Language Arts. The goals are for students participating in READ to achieve their respective grade level standards and to supply them with the tools that will start them on the subsequent level of competence.
