Moving Forward
Since its inception in 2001, FLACS has had graduated three fifth grade classes whose students have re-entered the traditional public school system for middle school with severely limited choices in District 9. The academic achievement of middle schools in District 9 lags behind that of other districts citywide. Only 39% and 63% of 8th graders in District 9 met proficiency standards on the 2008-2009 NYS English Language Arts and Mathematics exams, respectively. Student suspensions are also high in District 9 schools with 40% of schools reporting suspension rates of over 10% in 2007.
Due to these compelling reasons, FLACS broke ground in August 2009 to renovate its facility to make room for the middle school- sixth through eighth grades. FLACS has developed plans to offer a rigorous academic curriculum and provide guidance counseling to help students navigate the high school admissions process. With the academic foundation acquired at FLACS, eighth grade graduates will enroll in New York City’s best college preparatory high schools and earn degrees from the nation’s finest colleges and universities.

Why You Should Contribute to FLACS
FLACS is bringing a student population that has historically struggled in traditional public schools up to and above state averages in academic success. Our students are on track to ending the cycle of poverty. FLACS scholars envision a future for themselves that transcends the long established challenges of their community. The following program elements are the pedestals that have sustained our success: stimulating curriculum and high expectations, planning and reflection, early intervention and extended time, strategic use of data, professional development, family participation, and leadership. FLACS needs your support to continue developing our students into the bright leaders of tomorrow.
During these challenging economic times, every dollar invested in FLACS matters and makes a difference. You can be confident that your donation is put to efficient use.
