Founder’s Day - Celebrating the Vision of Bishop Dr. Raymond Rivera

On December 10, 2020, we celebrate and honor Bishop Dr. Raymond Rivera and the founding of the first Family Life Academy Charter School in 2001. We thank Bishop Rivera for his vision which has become our mission. His ideas have been a source of inspiration for our school leaders and professional staff who work tirelessly to empower and motivate our FLACS scholars. As an organization, we are proud of our history. We know where our roots lie and we continue to flourish as a community grown charter school network. Having founded the Latino Pastoral Action Center (LPAC) in 1992, Bishop Rivera fostered a partnership where students can succeed with the support of community-based organizations.

Our K – 8 FLACS family has grown from one school to four. Our schools provide a standards-based, multicultural education in a setting that encourages students to grow academically in a safe, secure environment. Students are encouraged to question inaccuracies and stereotypes, to reject bullying and approach social justice issues with the same vision as Bishop Rivera has done throughout his life.

This year has been very difficult for many of our FLACS families, having suffered the effects of the COVID19 pandemic. Despite all hardships, our FLACS Community has followed the vision of Bishop Rivera. We have united to continue to educate our students and support our families. Our teachers and administrators have provided virtual opportunities to provide the highest level of education expected from our schools. The Latino Pastoral Action Center, our partner, and Bishop Rivera’s community ministry has continued to serve the community and our families by doing food distributions during this time. We are proud that Bishop Rivera’s vision continues to be evident each day at FLACS.
