this life is like my home away from home a safe place being able to come here every single day and have that safe place is something really amazing the Reverend Rivera's Mission take into account that kids from the inner city can learn just as well as different students in the area was really something that I was very confident and he introduced the idea of open up school to improve the community I was all for it and excited for it isn't right and so we really do everything we I'm just support the kids to be their best selves whatever that looks like however that feels in the moment we do what we need to do to make sure that the kids have their backup my favorite thing about flax is definitely the community and how representative the teachers at the school so you know every student can have somebody to turn to when they have problems or conflicts and I feel like that's one of the main part that I love about black the staff and the teachers are very nurturing I so not only are we teaching the students but where I'm taking care of them while I've been here since kindergarten and five years just come from Dominican Republic when I joined the school I didn't really know English there was a CLA teacher that help me with my English good not kind of like that they need you to learn English by yourself not to mention one of my teachers spoke Spanish so she was kind of translated everything for while it was still learning and also I think we have a well-balanced program here right so our curriculum we've worked very hard as school together to create curriculum that really Target the needs of the children in this community we look at beta to see how we can better better service do students right because our goal is to send these children out into society to be good citizens right children that can do anything that they want to do in the future and be anything they in the future please do all of our schools have a program called a second stop which of the social emotional learning program that helps them regulate their emotions so everything from learning techniques and how to breathe being a being a responsible citizen being an upstander instead of a bystander so that's one way that we work with the children and you can be yourself. Would have make new friends if you feel like you're not safe any of the school is definitely a tri-community you are able to get along with a lot of the staff here you can get help if you need it and it's a genuine it's a good part of the name says it all we're saying it over and over again but because it it is a family our kids cry on the last day of school because they don't want to leave there worried about coming in on the first day but they're greeted with hellos from everyone from security custodians teacher's assistant school everyone knows everyone's name and that also makes a huge difference because we take the time to learn about our kids to know who they are they'll get hugs if they need a hug they'll sit here and have lunch with us if they want to have lunch with us we'll go in and we'll teach will do whatever it takes to make sure that our kids are successful in that they know that they're loved and a lot of times we've told our kids over the years I love you and they look at us like who you telling me I love you but we say it because we mean it and we want to make sure that our kids are well-rounded but that's social emotional part is very very important but then that's what makes the sand out
